The Portage
Why we started Tech Outfitters

We're James and Erin Caldwell. We live in Otsego with our kids, and this fall we started Tech Outfitters: a two-person company that helps small businesses around the northwest metro get found online and get their time back.
The Portage is the part of Tech Outfitters you won't find on the rest of the site. The other pages say what we offer. Here we'll write about building the company: updates as they happen, the wins, and honest retros on our mistakes.
What we hope this blog does
Three things. First, that people around here know Tech Outfitters exists. Second, a plain-language take on AI and what it means for a regular business owner, since most of what's written about it is aimed at engineers. Third, a resource for anyone starting a small business of their own: what works, what doesn't, and the real numbers once we have them.
We want to enable business owners to chase their dream, with a community of support behind them.

The importance of a complete digital presence
Drive through Otsego, Monticello, Elk River or Big Lake and you'll pass great restaurants, salons and contractors. Plenty have no website. Some run on a Facebook page; others have a site nobody has touched in years.
Even with AI and social media, a business still needs a good website with real, Read and stored by a search engine so it can come up in results. A page that is not indexed cannot be found by searching, no matter how good it is. content: what you do, where you are, what it costs. That's what the person browsing at nine at night reads, and what the AI search bots gather when someone asks for a plumber near Elk River. Without it, your products and services never show in those results.
The website is one piece. Facebook, Instagram, Yelp and your Google Business Profile should all tell the same story. Different hours on different pages, or a service listed in one place and missing in another, costs trust and confuses the search engines.
Honestly, this has been the exhausting part of starting Tech Outfitters. Every time I change a service or a price on our website, I have to change it on every other account too.
In the coming days I'll share how we're using Connecting an AI tool to the systems a business already uses, so it can do a task for you, like keeping your hours the same on every profile. to manage this. We're still perfecting it, which is exactly what this blog is for.
How Tech Outfitters can help
We start with a website built with Search engine optimization.Setting a site up so Google and Bing understand what a business offers and show it when someone searches for that. and Answer engine optimization. The same idea for AI assistants like ChatGPT and Google's AI answers: content written and marked up so they describe your business correctly. in place, so search engines and AI assistants both read it correctly. You see a live preview at a free consultation, and every price goes in writing before any work starts.
From there, a monthly subscription is like having your own software development team to lean on:
- Content kept optimized for browser and AI searches.
- The servers a website lives on. Every site needs somewhere to run, and someone keeping that running and up to date., security and Your address on the web, like techoutfitters.ai. It is registered for a year at a time and has to be renewed, or the site goes dark. maintenance, all included.
- Ongoing support to build or update parts of the site as your business changes.

AI coaching and integrations
As we support a business, we'll help diagnose the tasks that drain its time and energy, then automate them. Most owners we talk to spend their evenings on scheduling, follow-ups, invoices and the same questions over and over. That time belongs to your customers, your craft and your family.
AI is what lets a two-person team do this at a price a small business can afford. It also makes mistakes, so a software engineer checks everything it touches before it goes live.

Ready before the bigger names move in
Our area is growing fast. As new neighborhoods fill in, bigger chains and franchises follow, and they arrive with websites, ads and reviews already pulling in local traffic on day one. Our goal is to help the small businesses in growing communities like ours be ready before that happens: found online, with their time back.
So we don't see a website as a one-time project. We want to be a long-term partner: keeping your site fast and secure, helping you show up on Google and in AI search, and growing your online presence as your community grows.
Starting a company from scratch is a lot of guesswork, and we'd rather show our work. Thanks for reading along.
